Description:
The hero in the Kabuki play ‘Sakura giminden’, Kiuchi Sogoro, is the mayor of Kozu-mura (present day Narita), who presented an appeal in 1652 directly to the shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna requesting for tax relief for his farming village because of a bad harvest and harsh treatment by the local governor Hotta Masanobu. Sogoro knew such political action was illegal and that he would be executed. He tried to divorce his wife to save his family who would also be killed, but she refused to separate, preferring to die with her dutiful husband. Here she is shown seeing off Sogoro to deliver his appeal in a snowy landscape. Inset The local governor Hotta Masanobu mistreating a woman. From the series Setsugekka. ‘Snow, Moon, Flowers’
