The scene is based on the Noh play by Kayoi Komachi, a famous 9th century waka poet renowned not only for her beauty but the beauty of her words, and the only woman among the Rokkasen (the Six best Waka poets) who tells how she became the focus of love from a guard captain, Shii no Shosho. Shii no Shosho had vowed to visit Kayoi Komachi for one hundred successive nights, to merit an opportunity to meet the poet. Unfortunately Shii no Shosho died on the last night without attaining his goal. Inset: Shi no Shosho’s umbrella in a rain storm, another famous scene of Komachi, in which she prayed for rain.
