Description:
Famous engraving of a gentleman touching the rib cage of a “Mammouth”.
Excavated from a farm in New York by the artist Charles Willson Peale, the skeleton was later identified as a mastodon, not a mammoth. Peale displayed the improperly assembled bones (the tusks should point up, not down) in his Philadelphia museum, where it came to be seen by Thomas Jefferson and others as evidence that America was in no way inferior to Europe.
