An early and scarce dated example (1867) of Charles Smith’s table top globe.
SMITH’S TERRESTRIAL GLOBE Containing all the MOST RECENT DISCOVERIES. LONDON. SMITH & SON, 63 CHARING CROSS and dated 1867 below the title. 10″ (250mm) .
The Globe is made up of 12 hand-coloured gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees from 0°-180°-0° and hours XII-I-XII, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, an ungraduated Greenwich meridian, analemma in the Pacific (shown as a figure eight indicating the position of the sun at the mean solar moon over the course of a year), ocean currents and with the tracks of Cook’s voyages shown, some countries outlined in colour (the British Empire in red), partial coast of Antarctica delineated with Mt. Erebus an active volcano.
