Description:
Rare Irish issued satirical etching after George Cruikshank’s published in 1807 (BM: 10905), published by J. Le Petit, 20 Capel Street, Dublin.
The parson’s confrontation is about a woman flouting male authority. A gin-drinking, pipe-smoking, middle-aged woman brushes aside the criticisms of a church minister by giving as good as she gets. Above the doorway on the right is lettering which reads Rich Cordial Gin and inside the doorway is an early advertisement, for Old Tom tobacco.( Reference V & A; Museum number: E.1226-199)
“Woman! are you not asham’d of yourself to be sitting and smoking & drinking in Service time? Do you know who I am woman? I am the Parson of the parish!”
“More shame for you I say to be walking about troubling your head with other peoples consarns when you ought to be in church preaching your Sarmunt!”
