Description:

Exceptionally rare lithograph of a group on Sydney Harbour packing up their picnic  due to the onset of bad weather. On the picnic matt is an array of food and wine, with a kneeling man on the lower right, picking up an opened can of sardines.

From  Illustrated Sydney News February, 1876

The picnic is a recognised and popular method of enjoying a summer holiday. When everything is at hand, the company well chosen, and no wasps, snakes, ants, or cattle intrude, it is usually a capital treat except when Jupiter Pluvius discharges the unexpected shower. Then, indeed, a rush takes place. Sauve qui peut is the cry, and the result is emphatically – ‘Spoiled Sport’.
