Description:

Rare early issue of this etching with the original title, St. Aloysius College. Sydney and prior to the title change to, Kirribilli from Sydney Harbour Bridge.

We believe that Platt changed the title from ‘St. Aloysius College. Sydney’, as in our example to Kirribilli from Sydney Harbour Bridge soon after releasing the etching for sale. Our etching being number 2/125, is in Platt’s early handwriting unlike the example in the National Gallery which is numbered number 52/125 and was given by Platt in 1986 and probably printed, titled and signed around that time when he was 74 years of age. We have had another example of this same etching numbered 33/125 and that was also titled Kirribilli.

Collections:
National Gallery Australia: Numbered 52/125 and titled Kirribilli from Harbour Bridge 1934

Biography:

Austin Harold Platt (1912-2003)

Platt was born in Perth and had most of his brief education in New Zealand. He began his apprenticeship as an artist at the age of 20, when he worked and studied commercial art at Cedric Emanuel’s studio in Sydney, in the same building as Sydney Long’s studio. Cedric gave Austin lessons in etching at the Emanuel home in Dover Heights. Platt also studied at the Sydney Art School, the Royal Art Society, Maud Sherwood’s Sketch Club and at East Sydney Technical College, in such company as Long and Dattilo Rubbo. He went to Melbourne to sketch schools after the Collegiate Etching and Fine Arts Studio began to sell etchings of schools.
