Description:

Fine and very detailed etching of H.M.S. Sirius by the famous marine print maker and historian, Geoffrey Ingleton, numbered 28 of an edition of only 50, signed lower right in ink.

H.M.S. Sirius under the command of Governor Arthur Phillip, was the flagship of the First Fleet, which set out from Portsmouth, England, in 1787 to establish the first European colony in New South Wales, Australia. In 1790, the ship was wrecked on the reef, south east of Kingston Pier, in Slaughter Bay, Norfolk Island on 19 March 1790 while landing stores.

Geoffrey Chapman Ingleton (1908 - 1998)

Ingleton was a maritime historian and eminent hydrographer who in his early life was an officer in the Royal Australian Navy. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. Ingleton's diverse interests were always centred on things maritime. He was a cartographer, author, artist, etcher, ship modeller, book collector and publisher. He acquired an enormous collection of books and periodicals, maps, photographs, ships' log books and nautical charts.
