Very early colonial account of the Swan River Colony printed in March 12 1831 with a view of the Swan River and a letter from a colonist.
Single issue of the miniature newspaper, The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction; containing an early account of the Swan River Colony.
Printed London: J. Limbird, single issue bound with blue paper wrappers with printed title label, No. 480 Saturday, March 12, 1831. Two and half pages of text and a full page engraving titled; Swan River. The text is a letter from a anonymous settler at Swan River Colony who provides a detailed account of every aspect of the new settlement and describes the trials and tribulations encountered.
The first ship to reach the Swan River was HMS Challenger. After she anchored off Garden Island on 25 April 1829, Captain Charles Fremantle declared the Swan River Colony for Britain on 2 May 1829. The Parmelia arrived on 31 May carrying Stirling and his party and HMS Sulphur arrived on 8 June carrying members of the 63rd Regiment and families. Three merchant ships arrived shortly after: Calista on 5 August, St Leonard on 6 August and Marquis of Anglesea on 23 August.
