Cholnoky was one of the greatest Hungarian geographers and head of the department of the Francis Joseph University of Kolozsvár between 1905 and 1919. His map collection of his department had disappeared in the fifties but was rediscovered in 2001. Since 2001 the collections has been maintained by the Cholnoky Geographical Society.
