Description:

Edmond Bigot de La Touanne, naval officer on the Thetis expedition to the South Seas in 1824-6 commanded by H. de Bouganville. They had been given secret orders to report on the defense capabilities of British settlement. Bougainville &amp his officers traveled as far afield as possible. The grandeur of the Blue Mountains was so much admired by the French artists, that they declaimed it exceeded everything they had seen during their whole of their expedition.

From the very rare, Journal de la navigation autour du globe de la fregate la Thetis et de la corvette l’Esperance, the account of the expedition under the command of Baron de Hyancinthe Yves Philippe Potentien Bougainville.

Biography:

Edmond Bigot de La Touanne

French topographical artist and naval officer. Was lieutenant on the Thetis expedition to the South Seas in 1824-26 inder the command of Hyacinthe de Bougainville, which had been given secret orders to report on the defence capabilities of British settlements.

On arriving at Port Jackson in 1825 Bougainville, his officers and La Touanne extensively and explored the colony recording as they travelled. Bougainville’s report stated that altough the colonies defences were poor the harbour was so deep and so protected as to be almost impregnable.
