Description:

By far the best colour printer of the c.19th and famous for his patented process for printing in oil colours from several blocks in both wood and copper.

The Bridesmaid by Baxters is print number 260 in Courtney Lewis’s standard reference work. The print is signed within the plate, between the door knob and the dress but as Lewis states;
the background is usually so dark it is difficult to read the signature” (we can certainly attest to that). Published May 19th, 1855. It depicts a lady in curls and Victorian figured costume facing to the left, holding in her right hand a small bouquet. It has been suggested that it represents a member of Lord Londesborough’s family. It was taken from a painting by Brooks and was printed from a master plate and nine zinc blocks.  This is one of the famous large prints of “ladies” by Baxter.
