C18th view of Malacca.

This crucial gateway port for the transit of goods from the east to west was crucial in European conquest of the crucial spice trade in the C16th. After Alfonso de Albuquerque conquest of Malacca in 1511, with a force of some 1200 men and seventeen or eighteen ships, they were soon to discover the source the fabled ‘Spice Islands’, which would change the balance of power for the next 200 years.
