Description:
Panorama of Cairo in 1882 with the Citadel erected by Muhammad Ali Pasha in memory of his son Tusun at centre. The view is taken from the Moqattam range taking in all of Cairo to the river Nile. The view is was made the same year as Britain’s occupation of Egypt, part of the Anglo Egyptian War. One reason for the escalation of fighting was presumably to protect British access for its ships from India and its world wide prestige.
From the original edition of The Graphic.
Henry William Brewer (1836 - 1902)
Brewer was an English artist who is best known for his ‘birds-eye views’ of cities.
