Description:

Very detailed map of China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan from information supplied by the Society of Jesus and a series of maps made by D’Anville of all the provinces. The Jesuit missionary, St. Francis Xavier, had attempted to reach China as early as 1552 but never reached the mainland and died on the Chinese island of Shangchuan. Three decades later, the order succeeded and became highly influential in the Imperial court.
