Description:

Irish issued caricature of the Princess of Wales, squat and fat, wearing a short transparent dress, adjusts her hair at a large glass above a console table on which lies her black mask. Bergami stands beside her, holding a scarf and a box of ‘Essence Bergamy‘; he wears orders. Through a window reaching to the floor (right) is seen Vesuvius.

She asks: “Comment me trouves tu Mon cour” [sic]? (How do you find me?).
He answers: “Je t’aime mieux comme” / “cela, mon Ange”. ( I like it better like this, my Angel.)

Caroline of Brunswick was Queen consort of King George IV from 29 January 1820 until her death in 1821. She was the Princess of Wales from 1795 to 1820. Caroline moved to Italy, where she employed Bartolomeo Pergami as a servant. Pergami soon became Caroline’s closest companion, and it was widely assumed that they were lovers.
