Description:
1822 JUGGLING & THEATRE HANDBILL Very rare hand bill advertising Ramo Samee who is recognised as being the first professional juggler and sword swallower. The only other example we have been able to locate of this handbill is in the National Library of Ireland Farham papers collection (Ms 5011). There are a number of contemporary accounts describing the "East Indian" magician and juggler Ramo Samee as having performed in London and Dublin from 1810-22. At Vauxhall Gardens, ‘The Wonderful Indian Juggler’ 1812, 1821, 1822: Ramo Samee Jr. was performing with balls, pyramids and pagodas. In 1818 a member of the Ramo Samee Juggling Troupe was rumoured to have been shot to death at the Pall Mall Music Hall in Dublin, this incident is referred to in the handbill, as “the late despErate attack”. Samee closed his act with a demonstration of sword swallowing, unfortunately Ramo’s son died from internal wounds after one of these sword-swallowing acts, aged 23.
