Description:
Facsimile of Darwin’s own journal of his observations made on board HMS Beagle during its second voyage (1831-1836), which laid the foundations for his ground-breaking work On the Origin of Species. The Beagle’s visit to the Galapagos Islands provided the scientific evidence for Darwin’s theory of evolution which was further reinforced by his observations of the Australian fauna undertaken during the ship’s eighteen day stay in Sydney. The Beagle then visited Van Diemen’s Land and King George’s Sound before returning to England. Numbered 216 of 500 and signed by Darwin’s great grandson in blue ink. Published by Genesis, dark green leather to spine and cloth boards, with marbled end papers and cloth slip case, 843 pages with four illustrations and a coloured frontispiece.
