Description:

Facsimile of Darwin&#8217s own journal of his observations made on board HMS Beagle during its second voyage (1831-1836), which laid the foundations for his ground-breaking work On the Origin of Species. The Beagle&#8217s visit to the Galapagos Islands provided the scientific evidence for Darwin&#8217s theory of evolution which was further reinforced by his observations of the Australian fauna undertaken during the ship&#8217s eighteen day stay in Sydney. The Beagle then visited Van Diemen&#8217s Land and King George&#8217s Sound before returning to England. Numbered 216 of 500 and signed by Darwin&#8217s great grandson in blue ink. Published by Genesis, dark green leather to spine and cloth boards, with marbled end papers and cloth slip case, 843 pages with four illustrations and a coloured frontispiece.
