This iconic image captured the public’s imagination for over sixty years and was the first depiction of any Australian animal in western art.

Bertuch was a successful entrepreneur and a man of the Age of Enlightenment Bertuch had been orphaned at the age of15 and lived with his uncle. He pursued an education in theology and law eventually became a publisher and the largest employer in his home town of Weimar. This image is from the first pictorial encyclopedia for children Bilderbuch fur Kinderwhich was a landmark in educational publishing.
