Description:

Rare engraving of King’s School in 1871.

King’s was founded in 1831 by the Church of England as a school for boys, with the aim of providing education to the sons of the colony’s leading families. The idea for the school was first proposed by Governor Ralph Darling, who had noticed a lack of educational opportunities for boys in the colony. The school was initially established in a small building in George Street, Sydney, with just three students. In 1836, the school was relocated to Parramatta, where it was established on a site of 148 acres.
