Description:

The Little Green Road to Fairyland by Annie R. Rentoul and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. A. & C. Black, London, 1922, viii, 103p. deluxe first edition, number 93 of 300 copies on hand made paper, 8 col. & 8 bw plates. Cream buckram, with ruled border in green and title in gold lettering, decorated end papers. Ink inscription on inside cover. Spine browned, small tear at base of spine and foxing to text.

The years 1922 and 1923 were very busy ones for the Outhwaites. Two major books were published by A & C Black in London, and two exhibitions were held in Australia.

The Little Road to Fairyland was published in London at the end of 1922, and became the most popular of the Rentoul sister’s book. It was written directly in the spirit of Peter Pan.

Ida Rentoul Outhwaite (1888 - 1960)

Ida was born into a gifted literary and artistic family drew prolifically from childhood. Her illustrations were first published in 1903 in New Idea. Following her marriage she published little for ten years. In 1916 she brought out her first coloured work, Elves and Fairies, a deluxe edition produced entirely in Australia by Thomas Lothian. The series was a great success and journalists who interviewed the now famous illustrator were charmed to find her small and whimsical like her creations. Ida went on to become increasingly well known in England, France and America. Her illustrations are her enduring legacy of her love of the Australian bush.
