Description:

Large engraving of what was the recently opened Melbourne Coffee Tavern at 89 Bourke Street, Melbourne.  This was one of the grand coffee palaces opened in Melbourne prior to the end of the c.19th.

The front was divided into two shops, with the entrance to the tavern in the centre. The contractor, Mr. Nathaniel Kingston; Mr. William Pitt, architect.

Albert Charles Cooke (1836 - 1902)

Cooke was a painter, engraver, draughtsman and illustrator. Throughout his career he worked for many of the Illustrated newspapers, such as the Illustrated Sydney News, Illustrated Australian News, The Australasian Sketcher and The Leader. He was also well known for a series of birds eye views of a number of Australian cities and towns.
