Bennett, Brown’s assistant at the British Museum, published in 1866–7, and issued to subscribers for the year 1868 of the Ray Society. Imperial 4to, [IV], pp.15, paper boards, pl.38 (11 folding Pl I-X & XXXVI). Spine rebacked, corners bumped as usual, internally in very good condition. The majority of the fine copper engravings are by Ferdinand Bauer the artist on Matthew Flinders voyage of exploration.
Robert Brown the naturalist on the Flinders voyage expedition, can be called ‘The Father of Australian botany’, for his effort in collecting over 3,900 specimens, of which 140 genera were new to science. Brown’s specimens and Prodromus published in 1810 formed the foundation for George Betham’s Flora Australiensis (1863-1878).
Biography:
Robert Brown (1773-1858)
Brown was a Scottish botanist and palaeobotanist who made important contributions to botany largely through his pioneering use of the microscope. His contributions include one of the earliest detailed descriptions of the cell nucleus and cytoplasmic streaming; the observation of Brownian motion; early work on plant pollination and fertilisation, including being the first to recognise the fundamental difference between gymnosperms and angiosperms; and some of the earliest studies in palynology. He also made numerous contributions to plant taxonomy, including the erection of a number of plant families that are still accepted today; and numerous Australian plant genera and species, the fruit of his exploration of that continent with Matthew Flinders.
