Scarce engraving of the imposing Victorian Supreme Court building, Melbourne. Work began on the Law Courts building at the corner of William and Lonsdale Streets in 1874. The building was completed in 1884.

William Hatherell (1855 - 1928)

Painter born in London and studied at the R.A. Schools 1877–9. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Royal Watercolour Society from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell's, who sent him to Australia as one of the main artists for Picturesque Australia, as well as The Graphic and other American magazines.
