Description:
Extremely rare engraving of the Woolloomoloo fish market.
The first central Sydney Fish market was built in 1872 by the city council on the block bounded by Forbes, Bourke and Plunkett streets in Woolloomooloo. Constructed in the neo-classical design, it comprised of two levels with administrative offices fronting Forbes St and a lower building surrounding an inner courtyard.
Within this designated building fish was sold for the first time by licenced government auctioneers in order to curb the public health concerns of people buying and selling fish in less than ideal conditions.Â
By 1891 it closed and was replaced by a new market near Redfern railway station. For the first time fish was now being sold on tables instead of the floor as it was previously – hence marking further improvements in food handling and consequently the health of the people.
