The Wairau Massacre (Wairau Affray) occurred on 17 June 1843, was the first serious clash of arms between the Maori and British settlers in New Zealand after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and the only one to take place in the South Island Rare engraving the original edition of the Illustrated Sydney News.
