Description:
Mapmaker:
Robert Wilkinson (fl. c. 1768 – 1825)
Wilkinson was an English mapmaker active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Most of Wilkinson’s maps were derived from the earlier work of John Bowles, a distinguished English map publisher of the 18th century. Following Bowles death in 1779, Wilkinson acquired Bowles stock and updated the maps with the most up to date information of the time. One of his most notable accomplishments was the very successful atlas The General Atlas of the World (1794 – 1825). Wilkinson also published large format wall and case maps, such as Bowen and Kitchin’s Large English Atlas (1785), Speer’s West Indies (1796), Atlas Classica (1797), and the General Atlas of the World (1794, 1802, and 1809). In addition, he also published maps of New Holland (1820), and North America (1823), all of which were considered to be significant publications at the time. Wilkinson’s premises were based at no. 58 Cornhill, London from 1792 to 1816, following which he relocated to 125 Frenchurch Street, where he remained until 1823.
