Description:

One of the two rare panoramic books that Beatrix Potter issued in 1906, she had written a third story, The Sly Old Cat, for the same formatt but it was not published at the time because shops refused to stock these panoramic books as they became so easily damaged by the public when opening and closing them.

The story of, Miss Moppet, was specifically written for Harold Warne’s little girl, Louie, who had told Aunt Beatrix that Peter was much too good a rabbitt, and she wanted a story about a really naughty one! The manuscript, which is dated ‘Feb. 23rd. 06’, was given to Louie, and her father had it specially bound in a wallet form, which was copied for the published version.

This is the first edition, first issue, with ‘London & New York’ stamped on the rear cover, pp. 28 pages mounted on green cloth and folded, each illustration is accompanied by facing text, 32mo, bound into a wallet style binding with silver tab. Title stamped in dark blue at top and with a pasted colour illustration of a kitten at centre. Cover with light soiling, a little rubbed, minor splitting to folds. References; Quinby 11, Linder p.426

In 1916 the story of, A Fierce Bad Rabbit and The Story of Miss Moppet were printed in book form.
