Description:

Scarce engraving of the River Torrens weir, Adelaide. The Torrens Weir was officially opened on July 21, 1881. An earlier timber weir built in 1862 by prison labour had been destroyed by floods in 1872. (The sluice gates were added in 1929.) The new weir transformed the Torrens Valley from a string of muddy waterholes into a picturesque lake, one of the outstanding features of the city.

From the original edition of the Australasian Sketcher.
