Description:

The design for the bridge was won in 1884 by Sir Horace Jones, the City Architect.

Designed by Horace Jones.

The engineer, Sir John Wolfe Barry, devised the idea of a bascule bridge with two bridge towers built on piers. The central span was split into two equal bascules or leaves, which could be raised to allow river traffic to pass. The two side-spans were suspension bridges, with the suspension rods anchored both at the abutments and through rods contained within the bridge’s upper walkways.

Artist:

William Heysman Overend (1851-1898)

Heysman was a marine painter and illustrator. He was born in Coatham, Yorkshire and educated at Charterhouse school. From 1872 he contributed numerous illustrations for The Illustrated London News. He was prolific and for the next thirty years, nearly every issue contained his work. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1886.
