Description:

Colonial engraved view of Cromwell which was originally known as, “The Junction” being at the confluence of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers.

In 1862, gold was discovered below the Junction by two miners, Hartley and Reilly. Once the word of a gold strike was out, there was an influx of several thousand miners to the area.

Samuel Calvert (1828 - 1913)

Samuel Calvert (1828-1913) English painter and engraver who moved to Adelaide after his older brothers John and William migrated to South Australia in 1843. By 1850 Calvert had set up on his own account in King William Street then then moved to Melbourne as an engraver in 1853. He was a prolific and left a large body of work.

J.W. - William Cawston (1856 - 1891)

Cawston was a professional photographer, gilder and framer. He was transported to Australia on a seven-year sentence in 1845 and in 1856 opened a business in Launceston, Tasmania, as a picture frame maker. By 1862 he had a photographic studio, which continued to operate in Launceston until 1888, when it became Cawston & Sons. Cawston continued to work as a studio photographer until 1891, producing portraits and views of Launceston.
