Description:

The city is 30 km north-east of Wellington, and is centred on the upper (northern) valley of the Hutt River, which flows north-east to south-west on its way to Wellington harbour. The city derives its name from an English Member of Parliament, Sir William Hutt, who was a director of the New Zealand Company (formed in the late 1830s) that organised the settlement of the Wellington and Hutt Valley areas beginning with the arrival of the first immigrant ships from 1840.

Samuel Charles Brees (1810 – 1865)

Painter, architect, engineer and entrepreneur. Appointed engineer and surveyor to the New Zealand Company in 1842. He actively promoted emigration to New Zealand through talks and his own business. There are the finest steel engravings printer of New Zealand. Early and rare.
