Description:

Exceptional example of this scarce map with full original hand colouring. Usually found with only outline hand colouring to the continents. Australia with the eastcoast coloured pink and with the words, “New South Wales Discovered by Capt. Cook in 1770”. While the remainder of the continent is coloured yellow and titled, “New Holland” and with a number of Dutch discoveries as well as ones made by Dampier. Bass Strait is shown but the discoveries of Baudin and Flinders on the southern coasts are not shown. Numerous explorers tracks are shown, including Cook 1st voyage Cook 2nd voyage Cook 3rd voyage La Perouse Vancouver Clarkes (return) Gores From Charles Smith’s A general atlas being a collection of maps of the world and quarters, the principal empires, kingdoms, etc

Mapmaker:

John Cary (1755-1835)

Born in Wiltshire, England, his father a malster and churchwarden. Cary was appointed Surveyor of Roads to the General Post Office 1794. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Society of Arts 1804 for his large scale map of Cardingshire. His Strand premises burned down 17th January 1820 and which was continued by his sons at 86 St. James.
