Description:
Scarce early issue of this c.18th double hemisphere world map showing Australia according to the discoveries of Abel Tasman.
Superbly decorated with an elaborate title cartouche at top centre and a bucolic scene at bottom. In each corner of the map are the four elements, Air, Water, Earth and Fire. Later issues of the map have an imaginary east coast added to Australia which was propagated by the French School of Theoretical Geography of which Nicholas Bellin the French Royal cartographer, who was one of their leading figures of the group. Bellin’s influential map of Australia first published in 1753 included this imaginary east coast, joined from Van Diemen’s Land to the Solomons for the first time and became the default erroneous depiction of the continent until James Cook’s chart of the east coast was issued in 1773.

Thomas Jefferys (1719 - 1771) Well known English eighteenth century mapmaker, print seller and publisher. He was apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen on 3rd December 1735. He was appointed Geographer to the Prince of Wales in 1746 and to the King George III on 15 December 1760.
