Description:
Double hemisphere world showing the discoveries made by Cook on his three voyages of exploration. The tracks of the first and second voyage are shown but not those of his third voyage, although the Hawaiian Islands (Sandwich Islands 1778) are shown with a note stating, "Here C. Cook was killed". Australia shown attached to Van Diemens Land and not showing the discovery of Bass Strait (1798-9).
Thomas Bowen (1733 - 1790)
Mapmaker and print seller, son of Emanuel Bowen in Wales. Apprenticed to his father 1748. In partnership with Richard Reynolds in 1761 when they were prisoners in the King's Bench, required to make a schedule of their estate and effects as insolvent debtors. He produced numerous maps and atlases. He died in 1790 in reduced circumstances.
