Description:

Superb c.18th double hemisphere world map with a decorative title surrounded with floral motifs and swags, showing the discoveries of Captain James Cook’s three voyages . At lower centre is a projection of the north pole and in the top corners are, a celestial and terrestrial globe while in the lower corners an orrery and a compass. Australia’s east coast and New Zealand are shown which Cook had charted discovery on his first voyage. The chart shows Van Diemens Land prior to Bass and Flinders’s discovery of Bass Strait (1798-9).  Hawaii and Cook’s explorations and tracks on the north west coast of America are shown,  which finally proved the absence of the long sought North West passage.

This chart is not to be confused with the earlier issue of this map published in the first edition (1787/88) of Bankes’s, ‘A New Royal Authentic and Complete System of Universal Geography Antient and Modern‘, which only showed Cook’s first voyage and is further identified by the lack of the four images in each corner. This chart showing all three of Cook’s voyages, was issued in the second edition of Bankes’s, A New, Royal, and Authentic System of Universal Geography, Antient and Modern‘. (title changed). (1789/90 but prior to the third edition which was published in 1791).
