Fully hand coloured example of one the most decorative C19th maps of the world from The Illustrated Atlas by John Tallis. With scrolled borders and vignettes of Cook’s ship the and Resolution and another showing Polynesian artifacts. The tracks of Cook’s three voyages are shown.

Other vignettes include London, Gibraltar, Constantinople, The Pyramids of Ghizeh, Niagra, Point Neuf Paris, Niagra and Vesuvius.

John Tallis (1817 - 1836)

Bookseller and publisher of maps and atlases who produced the famous atlas of maps, 'The Illustrated Atlas, and modern history of the World'. The maps were drawn by John Rapkin (1813-1899) and were beautifully decorated with vignette views and local fauna and flora of the areas depicted. John Rapkin (1813-1899) Rapkin was a mapmaker and engraver who is best known for his superb engraving on John Tallis publications.
