Description:

A wonderful example of a rare and seldom seen Norman Lindsay etching purchase directly from the artist, a strong impression in near mint condition and with very wide margins. This etching had never previously been framed and was purchased by us in the original folded sleeve as provided by Lindsay himself.

In Lin Bloomfield’s, catalogue raisonne, Norman Lindsay Etchings, the author uses the term ‘Unpublished etchings’, to cover all prints ‘not put out for sale in stand alone’ editions that is, they were unpublished’. Bloomfield includes one hundred and seventy-five etchings in this list the majority of these being etched book illustrations and bookplates given as gifts or commissions and also a few unfinished etchings.

To The Refined in Spirit as per Bloomfield’s definition is one of his etchings which Lindsay never publicly sold through the usual means such as gallery exhibitions. We have been able to trace a handful of other numbered prints from this edition, one of these is numbered 17. This indicates that probably only a proportion of the edition of 25 was ever printed. Bloomfield also places a date of 1926 for this etching but our print clearly has the date 1916 written in pencil. The reason for the differing dates could be that the plate was finished in 1916 and various dates were placed on the prints corresponding to the year that Lindsay actually printed and sold.

Purchased  directly from Norman Lindsay and by descent.
