Rare first edition of one of the earliest descriptions of the Swan River settlement by Jane Roberts who had arrived in January 1830 on the Wanstead. The Wanstead was under the command of Matthew Curling Friend who was commissioned in 1829 by the merchant company Gale & Son to captain the Wanstead, carrying migrants to the Swan River and Hobart.
London: Richard Bentley, New Burlington Street. 1834. 1st edition, 8vo, pp. (ii) xviii last blank, errata slip, 396, 2 aquatint plates, frontispiece and Nicobar, on page 208. Light foxing scattered throughout as usual. Rare first edition (a 2nd Edition was issued in 1837).

Jane Roberts (1792-1861)
Roberts was an English author active in the 1830s, best known for her account of a two-year voyage to Van Diemen’s Land during which she visited and described the Swan River Colony. She had a considerable number of literary and social acquaintances including Augusta Leigh and Lady Cork.
