Description:

First edition of this large scale c.19th map of United States with Texas by Alexander Keith Johnston (1804–1871) the Geographer Royal for Great Britain.

There is a large inset of “river Niagara” at top left and a number of  notes on the map:

At lower left: The Independence of Texas was formally declared in March 1836. It was recognised by Great Britain in Nov. 1840 and has been acknowledged by the United States, France, Holland and Belgium.

At centre right: The Union consists of 26 States, 3 Territories (Florida, Wisconsin and Iowa, and 1 Federal District of Columbia,

At lower right: “The Slave-Holding States are situated, generally, to the South of the rivers Potomac and Ohio, comprising Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, the district of Columbia.” later issues of this map have added; New Jersey, Delaware and Texas.

Alexander Keith Johnston (1804 - 1871)

Johnston was a Scottish cartographer educated the University of Edinburgh. He was apprenticed to the Edinburgh engraver and mapmaker, James Kirkwood. In 1826 he and his brother William began in a printing and engraving business, forming the well-known firm of W. and A. K. Johnston. Johnston was a prolific mapmaker and publisher. He was soon professionally recognised by being appointed Geographer Royal of Scotland. In October 1849 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in 1862 he was a founding member of the Meteorological Society of Scotland.
