[Kimono design] - Antique Print from 1896

Genuine antique
dated:

1896

Description:

Fine woodblock of a kimono design. Very contemporary design and brilliant colours.

A colour
woodblock requires a separate block for every colour. A simple
subject by Japanese standards would usually use up to nine different blocks. A
key block would be cut first, giving the outlines of the image drawn by the
artist, then for each different colour a separate block would be carved by removing all the unwanted surface leaving the design or area to be printed higher. Each separate block would be inked with the chosen colour and the woodblock design printed in black outlines would be registered onto each of these separate blocks to have the individual colours printed onto it.
