Early geological map of the area surrounding Port Phillip Bay, Victoria from the Geological Survey of Victoria. In 1856 Alfred Selwyn, who headed the Geological Survey Office in Melbourne from 1852, commenced a systematic program of surveying, beginning with Central Victoria and the country around Melbourne which would result in an untitled series of maps, known informally as the Quarter Sheets. This map is one of only a handful printed by the Geological Survey Office in the 1860’s
