Description:
A pair of engravings printed on tow separate sheets. Fine architectural engraving from the series of the Amsterdam Town Hall, designed by the architect Jacob van Campen. The building was begun in 1648 and completed in 1665 after the death of van Campen. The town hall was designed as a powerful symbol of the riches of Dutch commerce especially in the Indies. As the Dutch East India Company was instrumental in the charting of the Australian continent as part of their spice trade activities, the marble floor of the Burgerzall, included a mosaic world map that importantly showed the results of Tasman’s discoveries in Australia.
Jacob van Campen (1595 - 1657)
Campen was a Dutch artist and architect, he designed a number of major buildings in the Netherlands, among which are the Mauritshuis, Paleis Noordeinde, and the Amsterdam town hall. Jacob Vennekool (c. 1630-1680) was a famous Amsterdam architect. He supplied the drawings. Hubertus Quellinus (1619-1687) was a Flemish engraver from the Baroque period.
