Description:
C.17th engraving of the ancient Roman fountain of Acqua Giulia (Acqua Marcia) which is in the northern corner of the garden of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II by Marco Sadeler. The Aqua Gulia was built in 33 AD by the Roman general Agrippa to supply water to the Caelian and Aventine hills. The aqueduct was repaired and expanded by Augustus during the last decade of the 1st century BC.

Marco Sadeler (1614–1660) This series capitalised on the renewed interest in the monuments of classical antiquity which reached its climax in sixteenth century Rome. Marco Sadeler, whose name appears on the plates, was an engraver and print seller in Prague in the early 1600’s and probably the nephew of Aegidius.
