Description:

Thomas Viaduct is a stone masonry railroad bridge that spans the Patapsco River and the Patapsco Valley gorge between the towns of Relay and Elkridge, Maryland and is the first multispan masonry bridge constructed in the United States to be built on a curve. It is the world’s second oldest railroad bridge still in use (the oldest is the Carrollton Viaduct located a few miles north) and is the world’s largest multiple arched stone railroad bridge built on a curve.

William Henry Bartlett (1809 - 1854)

Bartlett was born in London in 1809. He travelled extensively throughout Britain, the Balkans and the Middle East depicting views and scenes and became recognised as one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation. From 1836 - 1852 he made four journeys to North America and died of fever on board a ship off the coast of Malta, aged 45.
