Biography:
Henry Butler Stoney (1816-1894)
Butler was a sketcher, born in County Mayo, Ireland. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, he became an officer in the British Army and was posted to Australia in 1853, stationed in Tasmania. During the posting, he purchased land at Wyvenhoe, near Burnie in northeast Tasmania. Said to have been fond of sketching, he had a number of his Tasmanian sketches worked into engravings after he returned to England in 1855 for illustrations in his book, A Year in Tasmania, 1853-54.
