Description:

Early c.19th view of Encounter Bay looking towards Victor Harbour from the Bluff. Wright Island is in the foreground, and the tip of Granite Island. Shown are three ships which are from closest to shore:

South Australian (closest to shore)
Solway (centre)
John Pirie (closest to the viewer)
Rosetta Fishery (Huts at right, behind the ones closest to the beach)
Blenkinsop’s Fishery (at the very right of the image on the shore)
Solway’s Hut (2nd small cove near foreground)
South Australian Company Try works On 1st small cove nearest the foreground)
Cooperage (barrells can be seen at left of huts)
Long Boat at Anchor (2nd small cove near foreground)

The Solway, Pearson’s command, had anchored in Encounter Bay on 20 December 1837, together with the John Pirie which had arrived on the 15th. Both were driven ashore during a gale the next day.
