Description:

View of the Governor’s retreat a property on the banks of the Derwent River with the punt. Advertisement for the sale of the property FOR SALE, all that highly eligible and truly valuable Premises, delightfully situated on the Banks of the Derwent, in Elizabeth Town, New Norfolk, and now in the Occupation of His Majesty’s Government, under a Lease for 21/2 Years, at the Rent of �150 per annum. The Premises comprise a large and commodious House, a spacious Granary, extensive Stabling, Piggeries, Fowlhouse, sundry Out-offices, and large Yard, the whole of which is enclosed with a lofty Brick Wall a capacious well-fenced Garden, stocked with the choicest Fruit Trees, Shrubs, Plants and Vegetables there is also adjoining, a Paddock of rich arable Land, enclosed with a substantial Rail Fence, and attached to these, is a large Punt and Ferry Boats, with a right of way on the opposite side, over which there is a very extensive traffic, it being the only Ferry within 12 Miles of Elizabeth Town. Joseph Lycett  (1777-1828)

Painter & forger convicted in 1811 & transported to Botany Bay.  On arrival he was given his ticket of leave but soon was reconvicted for forgery and sent to the penal settlement of Newcastle. Again in 1821 he received a pardon and returned to England armed with a portfolio of colonial views. In 1824 John published “Views in Australia”  dedicated to the Earl of Bathurst. Lycett is acknowledged as being one the most important colonial artists to record the progress of the colony.
