Description:

In 1849 Charles Simmon purchased land at the entrance of Pichi Richi Pass and built a hotel. Around it in 1861 he laid out a town adopting an Aboriginal name rendered Thaltia by H.R. Minchin in 1855. It is derived from the Aboriginal word thaltja, meaning ‘The Gums’. The earliest and best engraved image of this gateway to the Flinders Ranges. Scarce.
