Description:

Rare aquatint by Jean Pierre Houel of the mountains seen from the town of Nicolosi which is situated at the base of Mount Etna and is the gateway for excursions to the famous volcano. Founded in 1359, Nicolosi is named for the monastery of San Nicola that was established here by the Benedictines. A village sprang up around the monastery and the town was established. It was entirely rebuilt following the eruption of 1669.

From Houel’s, Voyage Pittoresque des Isles de Sicilie, de Malte, et de Lipari .

The series was made after Houel’s second trip to Italy. He had spent three years in Sicily and made numerous drawings of archaeological sites, views and natural phenomena. The most important series of views of these islands recording many sites that no longer exist. All of the aquatints were produced by Houel.

Jean Pierre Houel (1735 - 1813)
